https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/18/us/politics/trump-pelosi-photo.html *Sorry this is a dated post, I just finally joined the
blog due to some technical issues.*
I think this article about Nancy Pelosi's finger wag 'breaking the internet' is a really interesting example of double standards in American politics. Trump coined the term 'nervous nancy' and posted the famous finger wag photo on his twitter last week. As a result, the internet blew up in uproar over Trumps disparaging remarks, but also many conservative syndicates took the tweet and ran with it.
The NYT's article on the post is quite interesting. It
highlights the gender imbalance of the room the photo took place in, like most
of the rooms Pelosi has battled in throughout her career. Pelosi was also
calling out Trump over pulling out American support for the Kurdish separatist,
abandoning them in Turkey, and allowing Russia to gain precedence in the
region.
Here, again, Trump has shown his uncanny ability to disorient media and politicians alike by baiting them to look at his twitter instead of the policy he pushes forth. Trump does not care if he is called a sexist, he cares if people focus on the concessions he is giving to Russia by creating a power vacuum in the area. The NYT article says, "It was a stunning accusation of disloyalty, but the substance has all but been lost in the hoopla around the body language between the two of them, and the gender imbalance in the room."
