I just stumbled across this BBC article and I thought it was interesting, given what Miss Representation was talking about. I won't talk much about the movie, but I just found it compelling that Senator Hanson-Young took legal action against her defamation by Mr. Leyonhjelm, as opposed to accepting that that's the way it is. I'm not sure if politicians can sue for slander and defamation in the US, but I think it's important to curb false statements that have no backing and are made for the sake of being malicious.

When a man does the wrong thing, he should apologise, and when he doesn't, he should be called out"

I'm glad Sarah Hanson-Young won her defamation case. I think people oftentimes underestimate a woman's response to bullying because it is expected that women hold in and limit their responses. I hope her victory is used as an example to show that actions have consequences regardless of the aggressor's and the victim's status.
ReplyDeleteThere's always been a pronounced social trend of unrelenting affirmation of men as well as the constant dismissal of women. Throughout the class we've seen the polarization of attitudes and response when it comes to bearing judgment on the same behavior carried out by two different individuals simply on the basis of their sex. The delegitimization of women's issues continues to persist, and even in situations like this where Senator Hanson-Young was able to champion over falsified statements, there are many cases where rumors go unaddressed and crime against women fail to see justice, while the male perpetrator's actions go silently under the rug.
